Recently I tried and purchased the Kodak Digital Gem Airbrush Pro PlugIn for Photoshop. I am amazed with this plug in. Traditionally I use a very intense and timely manner to smooth skin without loosing much skin detail. I am particular about this as my style is to not over blur an image or a model that he or she looks plastic. I do not care for that look. The Gem plugin allows you to smooth skin and maintain all the rest of the detail in an image. It is truly amazing. After applying the filter you can use the Edit/Fade menu item in Photoshop to fade the effect to your liking. It does not create a new layer so you must you Fade right after applying the plugin or the option to Fade will no longer be available. My preference is to create a new layer first which makes it easier to use an opacity change for that layer in lieu of the fade option.

After Applying Digital Gem Plug In with a 40% Fade:

On a close up such as this one I typically greatly increase the Opacity of the Digital GEM layer, 40% on this image. On a full length shot I would lessen the opacity to around 70%. I also use a Layer Mask on the Digital Gem Layer and brush over the areas that do not need smoothing such as hair, teeth, lips, eyes and eye lashes…Don’t smooth those important details.

Mac Users:

I did have some trouble getting the Plug In to register on both my Mac Notebook and My Mac Pro Workstation. The issue had to do with permissions. Below is the response from technical support which fixed the problem:

We are sorry to hear that you are having difficulty registering your plug-in. Please be aware that support for our plug-ins is via our website and e-mail only.

Our software team believes that the root cause of your concern is that permissions on a Library folder are set incorrectly and the installer cannot create the needed .plist file on the path /Users/Shared/Library/Preferences. There is more than one Library folder within the Mac OS structure, the folder in question is located on the drive where OSX is installed and on the path /Users/Shared/Library.

There are two ways to fix the permissions on this folder.

1) Open a Finder window and navigate on the drive where OSX is installed to Users/Shared/Library.
Check the state of the permissions on this folder – all three items should be “Read/Write”. If they are not then continue with this procedure.
Click on the Library folder once then select Get Info from the File menu and the dialog shown will open.

If the padlock icon in the bottom right corner of the Get Info dialog shows a closed padlock then click on the lock. The user will be prompted for their password and once it is provided the permissions section of the dialog will become editable.

The state of each of the permissions is a pop-down menu. Change the state of each to Read/Write.
Close the Get Info window and register the plug-in.

2) Open Terminal (found in the Applications/Utilities folder) and run the command:
sudo chmod -R 777 /Users/Shared/Library
Terminal will prompt for the user’s admin password before completing the process. If the user has not set a password Terminal will not be able to complete the command; use method number 1.

Note that the Permissions Repair process in Disk Utility will not affect this setting. It won’t hurt to run the process but it won’t fix this problem either.
