Ideally, USB flash can hold multiple copies of the Cisco IOS and multiple router configurations, and you can use it to easily move and copy those IOS files and configurations from router to router. Will save you a lot of time!

Problem

Cisco ASA firewalls have had USB sockets on them for a while, but a dig into the documentation only yielded, ‘for use in future releases’. Well they are working now!

Note: Firewall shown is a 5516-X (running version 9.8(1))

Solution

1. One last option would be copy usbflash0: flash: if you just want to save it to the switch without loading it into the startup or running config.Bradley Selzer CCIE# 60833.
2. If your router or switch has a USB port you will be able to insert that flash drive and with a few commands will be able to boot your device to that USB, copy the firmware to internal flash, and reboot again from the internal flash versus having to upload the image through the serial port or some other method.

Your drive needs to be formatted as FAT (not NTFS), I’m going to update/install some AnyConnect client software, but there’s nothing to stop you uploading a new IOS or ASDM images.

Your drive will get mounted as ‘Drive1’ (unless you have a secondary flash drive onboard already).

Note: I have seen drives not get recognised like so;

If that happens to you, you will need to reload the ASA (assuming the drive is formatted correctly) before it will be recognised.

You can then copy the files to the main flash (disk0:).

To prove the file is in the main ‘flash’.
